Delyn Model Flying Club was formed in 1981 by a group of progressive aeromodellers. The club acquired the use of the Kettle Field and the club has since thrived and now has 60+ members whose activities cover the whole range of model aviation. The aim of the club is “to enourage the flying of model aircraft as a leisure activity”.
The club is affiliated to the British Model Flying Association and all members are insured for their sport through this association.
ACTIVITIES
In pursuit of its aim, model flying is permissible every day, throughout the year, from 0930 until dusk. Planning permission forbids the flying of i.c. powered aircraft after 1300 on Sunday but silent flying (electric/gliders) is permitted.
The majority of members fly radio control models and this encompasses a wide variety of model types. Free flight, electric, control-line and gliders are also regularly flown and members compete in local and national competitions
Flying training for radio control takes place every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, weather permitting. Training is free and a small charge is made to cover fuel costs. The club has its own training aircraft for use by members. Approved club instructors provide flight training using the buddy box system. They conduct examinations and present certificates of achievement (Bronze Award) to the novice pilots. After a period of further flying experience, members are encouraged to take the BMFA “A” qualification which is conducted by the BMFA Approved Club Examiner. The Club an also arrange for members to undertake the BMFA “B” Certificate examination. Experienced club pilots are willing to offer further training and advice on all aspects of model aircraft flying, dependent on the individual pilot’s interests and expertise.
“Swapmeets” (the aeromodellers’ equivalent of the car boot sale) are organized by the club in March and October. These events have proved to be very popular, with members and modellers in North Wales and the North-West.
In May, the club organises a 3D Aerobatics Day which attracts “prop-hangers” from all over the country. In July the club invites modellers and members to the annual DMFC FunFly when pilots can visit the Kettle Field and fly throughout the day, spectate and meet aeromodellers of similar interests. Members organise occasional indoor flying events at the nearby Deeside Arena which attract regular support.
The club holds meetings on the second Friday of the month in Gorsedd Village Hall. Meetings begin at 2000 when business is kept to a minimum and is followed by a programme which may include video film, demonstrations, technical talks, or indoor flying competitions. During June, July and August the club meet down at the Kettle Field for a funfly which includes a BBQ and BYOF for members and their families.
SOCIAL EVENTS
The club holds an informal annual dinner for members and their partners early in each New Year.
Visits are often arranged to events at other clubs and a number of members attend national shows to spectate or to purchase those all important modelling items.
PUBLICITY
A number of members regularly contribute articles to the aeromodelling press and often use the Kettle Field for location and flying photographs.
If you are interested in aviation or aeromodelling, please accept our open invitiation to visit the Kettle Field. We are sure that you will find it an interesting and stimulating time. The club policy is to offer all aspiring pilots access to a flying experience and you are invited to try radio control model flying “on approval”.
You are welcome to attend any of the monthly club meetings to meet the members and to get a flavour of the sport.
